The Spanish Verb Ser: Uses and Examples for Beginners

Teacher pointing at the verb SER in Spanish

If you're just starting to learn Spanish, there's one verb you'll come across from the very first day: SER.

"Soy Ana," "eres estudiante," "somos de Brasil"… The verb ser appears constantly when we talk about ourselves, other people, and the world around us.

But when do we use it?

How do we conjugate the verb ser?

First, let's look at its present-tense forms:

For example:

Yo soy Laura.
Vos sos brasileño.
Ella es profesora.
Nosotros somos estudiantes.
Ellos son amigos.

When do we use ser?

1. To talk about who we are

We use SER to say our name, profession, or nationality.

Soy María.
Soy profesora.
Somos argentinos.
Él es brasileño.

2. To describe people and things

We also use SER to talk about characteristics.

We can use SER to say who someone is to us.

Ella es mi hermana.

Ana es mi profesora.

4. To say where we are from

Another very common use is talking about our origin.

Ella es de Brasil.
Somos de Estados Unidos.

A verb you'll use all the time

You don't need to memorize all the rules for ser at once. At the beginning, the most important thing is to learn these structures and start using them in real conversations.

You can practice by talking about yourself:

Soy…
Soy de…
Soy… años. ❌
Tengo… años. ✅

Little by little, you'll learn and incorporate new uses.
